Why Class 9 is the pressure point

Class 10 boards. Coaching for competitive exams. School expectations. Peer comparison. Social media at its worst developmental moment. Puberty. Identity formation. And — on top of all that — your child hears "Class 9 is when your future is decided" from well-meaning aunts at every family dinner.

Class 9 is when adolescent anxiety in India spikes most sharply. This is not a vibe; it's in the data. The NCERT's own 2022 Mental Health & Wellbeing survey showed 81% of students aged 13-15 reported anxiety about studies, and 42% reported feeling it most days.

If your child seems withdrawn, more irritable than usual, losing interest in things they used to enjoy, sleeping poorly, or stuck in unfinished homework loops — it's not laziness. It's stress.

What actually helps

1. Stop asking about marks at dinner

It sounds obvious; most of us still do it. Replace "How was your test?" with "What was the most interesting thing you learned this week?" Same information, one-tenth the stress load.

2. Protect one activity a week that isn't academic

Football. Painting. A walk with the dog. Whatever it is, it should be non-negotiable. The brain needs time not studying to consolidate learning — this is a biological truth, not a luxury.

3. Normalise "I don't know"

4. Sleep is the secret weapon

What backfires

  • Telling a stressed child they have no reason to be stressed.
  • Promising rewards for marks (it corrodes intrinsic motivation).
  • Comparing to siblings, cousins, or the child next door.
  • Dismissing Instagram/social media stress as "that's not real".
  • Scheduling the summer holiday with coaching.

When to ask for help

  • Sleep problems lasting more than two weeks
  • Withdrawal from all social activity
  • Statements about self-harm or not wanting to exist
  • Significant weight change
  • Panic attacks
